You may think that a smoothie maker is pretty much the same thing as a jug or hand blender. While you’re technically correct, there are a few notable differences.
First of all, a smoothie maker is usually much better at crushing ice. Ice is a staple of any smoothie or cold drink, especially if you’re using frozen fruit. Even though blenders usually get through ice, dedicated smoothie makers often have settings which add more power.
Another difference is that smoothie makers are designed to help you blitz and go. They may include several mixing jugs, most of which will be personal sized drinking bottles. Whether it be a smoothie or gym shake, you can take it away without any mess or need to transfer.
There is a whole host of smoothie blenders out there. Some more powerful than others, some able to give you different blade or jug options and some able to blend other foods such as soup. It’s a hard task to find the best, so to make the choice easier, have a read of our smoothie maker reviews and buying guide.

Best Smoothie Maker
As expected with a Sage product, this is a powerful and pretty advanced smoothie maker which is a lot more accommodating than many other personal blenders out there. It claims to pulverise ingredients up to 42% better than other models, resulting in smoother drinks and quicker waiting times. The powerful 1000W motor – more than double most others – is great for tackling not only fruit, vegetables and ice cubes but also nuts, seeds and oats. Combined with a strong stainless steel blade and an impact resistant beaker, mixtures are whizzed up much faster than with other models reviewed. It comes with two bottles, so you have one spare. We liked the little handle on the lids, too. This makes it easy to carry or hold if you’re out on a run. The die-cast metal body is not only long-lasting but will blend in with your other stainless steel accents. This is handy if it’ll be left out on the bench for all to see. We liked how smooth-cut the bottles were, with no uncomfortable threads around the lid area or random grooves. Easy to drink from, and easy to clean. You also get a little recipe book, which is a nice touch. Take your smoothies beyond the usual strawberry and banana flavours. Or, follow how to make almond milk, ice pops and mocktails. Expand your horizons and get the most out of the appliance. It passed our leakage tests, and even though it is pretty noisy, this is to be expected with the power it throws out. You need to twist the cup to turn it on which can be a bit tiring on the wrists. But it whizzes fast so not a huge issue. Otherwise, a powerful item worth the extra money compared to other models. SAGE Boss To Go BPB550BA Blender User Manual No frills and easy to use, yet incredibly powerful. A quality build, robust cups and easy to drink from too Super powerful and able to produce the smoothest smoothies possible, the NutriNinja Compact Duo can rustle up anything from nuts, seeds, frozen berries and chunks of fruit and veg, and will even cut down chia seeds. The Auto-iQ presets will let you press a button and do all the hard work for you, so you don’t have to spend ages guessing the best speeds and pulses. Superior crushing power will also transform your ice into powdery snow, for the perfect iced drink that looks like it was formed by a professional. There is a 25-page recipe book included in the box which is great if you need a bit of inspiration and ideas of how to take the product further and get the most out of it. There are three speed settings, which doesn’t sound huge, but due to the powerful motor, it will be able to tackle any items at whichever speed it goes at. It is on the noisier side, but due to how fast it will tackle the contents, it isn’t hard to cope with. For the price, we think it is a steal. NINJA Nutri Ninja Duo BL642UK User Manual Fast, powerful, and packed with handy little helpings, this is the perfect blender if you want to be able to tackle a whole host of recipes and mixtures The Vitamix Ascent A2500 is a high-performance blender that will handle any mixture you have to throw at it. The versatility is next to none. From hot soup to ice cream and sorbet, this blender fit all of our blending needs. The quality of the blend is as smooth as any professional blender, and we found the least amount of leftover chunks and clumps from the Vitamix. If you are looking to use this to make smoothies with fruits and veggies, we would hands down recommend this if it is within your budget. The container that comes with the blender is a 2 Litre container, but you can get multiple sized containers to fit your needs. The Self-detect technology will recognize the container size and automatically adjust the perfect program settings. The digital timer and program settings allow for optimal convenience. In addition, there is a 10 year warranty which is quite amazing from an amazing brand. Very powerful and adaptable to whatever its use, this Vitamix Ascent A2500 is great for anyone who is a regular blender user and prefers to invest in long term reliable appliances. With the same one-touch principle as the Breville, this blender is super easy to use and will blend your drinks and smoothies up very quickly and easily, even with lots of ice. It uses vitamin extraction to ensure that you get the most nutritious end result, and the Auto IQ function blends the ingredients in the most efficient way according to what you’ve used. With a powerful 1000W motor, you will not struggle to blend everything smoothly, with no gritty paste. There is also two different sized cups included, so you’re ready for however much you want to prepare. The Ninja has two settings: Blend and Ultra Blend. Blend is best for things leafy veg, fruit and yogurt, whereas Ultra Blend should be applied to firmer ingredients like ice, tough vegetables and nuts. This model also comes with a cool recipe guide to help get you inspired. Features: Nutri Ninja with Auto IQ BL480UK user manual This high-quality on-the-go model is another great option for health-conscious individuals who are willing to invest a little more in their purchase. This personal 600 ml model is just the job for when you want to quickly whip up a healthy drink and take it with you. It is a one-person-blender with an additional portable bottle that makes it easy to carry around. The lockable lid means you’re safe from it leaking in your bag. It is very easy to blend using this device, as it has a very simple one-touch operation – you just attach it to the base, twist it to lock and press the button – and off it goes. It’s great for preparing healthy drinks, such as smoothies, ice slushies and protein/sports shakes, so it’s a great buy for a health-conscious person that wants to make their own fresh drinks. This is a much better device for making protein shakes than a simple shaker because you don’t get powder build-up around the edges. This machine is not bad at crushing ice for drinks, but if you’re looking for something that’s going to be doing heavy-duty ice crushing on a regular basis, then you might need something more powerful. Incredibly easy to use and pack away when you’re ready to leave the house, this Kenwood is perfect if you need a smoothie blender with a sports bottle so you can dash off to the gym in the mornings. There are just two speeds and a pulse function, so you don’t need to spend ages tweaking it in order to get the right results. Just add the ingredients, attach the blade, fit to the base and twist the dial to get it whizzing. Once it is done, just swap the blade for the bottle lid. It seems to blitz easily, whether the ingredients are frozen or fresh and no matter how much ice is in the mix. The blade cuts vertically and horizontally to get it done even quicker. The pulse function is good for that bit of an extra boost, too. It is dishwasher safe, and because the bottle is quite a smooth shape with few grooves, is easy to clean by hand too after a soak. You should do this as soon as possible though to loosen residue. The blade is also simple to clean, although as expected you have to be careful. You get two bottles with the purchase. This is good in case one is in the washing up bowl, or there are a few people in your household who want to use it. It isn’t suitable for dry ingredients so don’t crush ice cubes or grind nuts on their own. Always add liquid to your mixes. The bottles are also quite narrow, so you may need to chop fruit and veg down small to fit through the opening. We tested for leaks though, and it seemed pretty safe – perfect for that dash to the train when it is in your bag. Once it is all done, just pop on the sports cap and take it with you wherever you’re going. The beaker is 750ml in capacity, so perfect for any quantity of drink. There is a handy measuring guide on the side if you like to be precise, and the instruction manual gives you some great inspiration if you need a bit of help when it comes to flavours. It does struggle a little with larger bits of fruit so make sure everything is chopped down well, but oddly it copes well with tougher items and nuts. Some people commented that after long-term use, the safety seal is a little unpredictable and can start wearing away. This is something which we didn’t experience, but it is worth taking great care of it and giving it frequent inspections. It also works best with quite liquid-based mixes and isn’t appropriate for dried items such as breadcrumbs. But for under £20 and something quick and simple, it is a great solution. Whether it rivals the Breville, we aren’t quite sure, but the larger capacity will appeal to some. Smoothie Maker Buying Guide
Dimensions
The size of your smoothie maker may be important if you’re going to be storing it away in between uses.
Depending on how often you use it, most people will be popping it in the cupboard. Not only do you not want to take up a load of storage space, but you also want to be able to lift it out and put it away without it being too heavy, bulky or cumbersome.
Cup
As the aim of a personal smoothie maker is to be able to take the bottle on-the-go, you’ll want a cup which not only is a perfect size but also shaped well to carry, doesn’t leak and is easy to clean at the end of your drink.
There are usually two styles, taller slimmer models and larger, wider models. Which you prefer is down to personal choice, but the latter are often easier to clean as you can get your hand/a brush into the bottle. The former may be more comfortable to carry and fit into your bag, though.
Try and get a model which comes with at least two bottles, and with spares available to buy. This way, more people can use the machine, or you can prepare your lunchtime smoothie at the same time as your gym shake without having to transfer into another bottle and wash them up first.
Noise
All blenders and smoothie makers are noisy in operation. They’re powerful, and if you are chopping ice and other hard ingredients, then noise is a given.
Some can hide this better than others, though. If you live in a busy household and are often up before everyone else, you’ll want one which wins points for being quiet.
Cleaning
As you can imagine, smoothie bottles can get pretty dirty when in use. From seeds to the actual smoothie, if the container is an odd shape or too narrow to get your hand in, then these bits could get stuck.
In our reviews, we have mentioned whether the bottles are dishwasher safe and, if not, if they’re easy to clean by hand. Cleaning them thoroughly is important to not only keep them looking nice but also stop bacteria and germs.
Operation
The vast majority of smoothie makers are controlled by buttons or a dial, but there are still a few out there with which you need to twist the bottle when in the base.
Buttons are our favourite, as they’re simple to switch between. Dials are also simple, although some can be a bit stiff at first. The latter option is seen with very powerful models usually, but may not be ideal for anyone with weak wrists or smaller hands which can’t grip well.
FAQs
Why Should I Buy A Smoothie Maker?
You love your visit to the local cafe to grab a smoothie before you head to work. You buy huge bottles of smoothie mix from the supermarket, and they barely last two days.
Smoothie makers are always in your home, very easy to set up and use and you don’t need a lot of ingredients to get them going. From a bag of frozen berries to a load of bananas and scoop of peanut butter, via the veg which has been sat in your fridge for five days and you’ve not yet eaten, smoothies are a very versatile way to get your five a day.
You know what is going into the drink, and will save so much money compared to buying them ready-made.
What Size Of Cup Do I Need?
Most come with bottles around the 0.5L serving, which is ideal for a single serving smoothie and a little more. Some may come with beakers of various sizes, or there may be smaller/larger ones to buy as extra which means you can whip up a smaller portion for the kids or a larger portion for the family to share.
